Do you know that stress is among the major killer diseases in the world?
Stress occurs when a person is unable to figure out a solution to a current pressing need/problem.
The brain is subjected to a great turmoil while trying to reach at sensible solution to a problem.
Normally, human beings adapt coping mechanisms to a stressful situation.
Some people oversleep; others over eat; while others escape from the problem altogether.
There are several other ways that people adapt to a stressful situation and some are healthy while others can be detrimental to your health.
Signs And Symptoms Of Stress
- Inability to concentrate
- Feelings of anger, frustration
- Low self esteem
- Excessive moodiness
- Failure to maintain your cool at times, which may lead to explosive anger
- Over eating or under eating
- Over sleeping or under sleeping
- Loss of interest in some previous pleasurable activities
- Headaches.
You may have 2 or more of these symptoms and if you recognize any of those plus the presence of a nagging problem, then it comes to that time where you have to do something before the stress consumes you.
5 best ways on how to relieve stress
Acknowledge the presence of the problemThis is the very first step; acknowledging that a problem exists is very helpful. It will help you see clearer and think better than denying it's presence then just get hit by reality.
When one accepts a situation, you gain more calmness and you are able to relax.
Think of how you can solve the problem
All answers to your problems, always lie deep inside of us, it's mostly up to you to brainstorm within yourself, how best you can deal with the situation.
For example; you are being owed a lot of money and the debtors are after you.
what you should do here is;
Sit down alone with no distractions; realize that you got yourself into a mess and you need to come out alive.
Critically analyse your finances and see how best you can sort this problem out.
You can come up with ideas such as; starting a side business to help supplement your income, liaising with your debt collectors to add you some more time to figure out the problem, engage the debtors in some collective bargaining process like submit a certain amount of money every twice a week or something like that, you can also opt to sell one of your assets to offset the loan....etc...
I mean, all these answers will come from you and other people can only help you if you know exactly what you want or how you would wish it done.
The process is same for those going through heartbreaks, grief etc. - here you can make a solid decision to move on no matter what and take small baby steps towards achieving your goal. It takes time but again, time heals everything.
Implement the solution
You have already come up with some possible solutions to your problems, now it's the time to implement them. Take small steps especially if it's a long term problem.Realize that, you can easily backslid to depression if you are not able to implement this, ask for help from other people in implementing your solutions.
Write a journal of your everyday goals and objectives, and make sure you achieve them. That is;
how you are going to achieve your objectives step by step.
For example; in our earlier case above
My solutions;
- Main goal: Pay my loans in small amounts lets say 500 every week.
- How am I going to do this;offering my skills to the people in my neighborhood or as a business (add your skills).
- My daily goals; make at least 600 daily
Write how much you have been able to achieve, and if it's not working, look for another way. Go back to step 2. You can even join heads with someone else so as to get better ideas.
Evaluate your progress
- Is it working?
- Do you need better ways to manage the problem?
- Are the methods effective?
- Is the problem half solved now?
If you answer yes to all of these questions, then you know you are managing your stressful problem adequately, if not,, then go back to step 2 and 3.
Draw lessons from that problem
- How did that problem come about?
- How did I cause that problem?
- How can I avoid the same problem in the future?
- What are the valuable life lessons that I have learned from that?
This step is very important because; in this life problems come to provide us with lessons. These lessons make us wiser and wiser. If you do not learn from a problem, then it will re-occur again.
For example; if you did not learn from your earlier problem of being in debts, you will not manage your finances in the future, as a result, this problem will re-occur again until you LEARN!.
What If You Do Not Find Possible Solutions
- To acknowledge that there is nothing in your power you can do at the moment to change the situation. This will help you relieve the anxiety and you will be able to remain sane for some period of time, until when you can figure out the problem clearly.
- Avoid over thinking and strive to look positively at everything around you. This will help you recognize more ways/solutions/opportunities that you could use to deal with stressful conditions.
- You should also talk to your trusted friends and hear what they think about it. However, do not let them make decisions for you, their work is only advising or agreeing/disagreeing with you.
- Also engage in relaxation techniques such as massage therapies, taking warm baths, go out with your friends or do something that you love, avoid alcohol and other shortcuts as they are enemies of progress.
Complications Of Stress
- Can go into depression
- Prolonged stress can aggravate diseases such as;
- Hypertension,
- Peptic ulcer disease,
- Lowered body immunity,
- Susceptibility to cold and cold sores,
- Acne,
- Indigestion,
- Hormonal imbalance among others.
I hope this will help someone deal with stress and stressful conditions positively and emerge strong after the problem.
